Blazing Pianos

I’m concertizing this weekend, if you’re interested. I played this concert last year, too. Yes, it really is called Blazing Pianos. It’s a two-piano concert at a fabulous venue - if you’ve never heard music performed at Bethany Lutheran in Cherry Hills, you’ve missed out. The two pianists have played this concert annually for years. One is a doc (a knee/hip kind - what’s that called again?) and the other is a longstanding accompanist in the Denver area (and quite possibly the loveliest lady ever. I hope my girls grow up to be like her!)

I was invited to play last year and was fortunate enough to be invited back. It’s a great time, it’s free, and there’s a reception afterwards, so one of those reasons should be incentive enough. The second half of the concert, on which I’ll play, features some really interesting Argentinian tangos by Piazolla. You’ve never heard anything quite like this, I promise!

More music (with me) on October 1 with the Arapahoe Philharmonic, and October 14-15 with the Aurora Symphony. Details on those later!

UPDATE: John points out that I didn’t actually mention, y’know, when the first concert is. That’d be this Saturday at 7:00pm at the aforementioned Bethany!

“…Piazolla. You’ve never heard anything quite like this, I promise!”

Au contraire! I love Astor Piazolla - his version of tango is brilliant. Al DiMeola loves to play Piazolla, and he is one of the several artists I’ve heard play his stuff in addition to the man himself.

So exactly when is it? I’ve a busy weekend and probably can’t make it, but just in case… :)

A trumpet grad assistant at CU when I was there (1991) rearranged the Arutunian Concerto for two pianos. It was a really effective arrangement . . . of a fairly cheesy but thoroughly entertaining piece of music. His name is Marc Fulgham, and I don’t know where he is now, but I bet he could be tracked down if you ever get such an opportunity and they’re looking for obscure Eastern European pieces of music.
