Opt out

Tracey and I have recently started working through the Financial Peace University personal finance system. Very good, highly recommended. I’m sure I’ll write more about it after the (13 week) class is finished, but for now…

This is something that came up recently as a bill - aka, “Do Not Mail” - in the state house here in Colorado (the bill was killed, incidentally). You can opt out of any prescreened offers from marketers. You know the ones, “you’re already approved for up to $50,000!” I don’t want junk mail. Well, that’s not entirely true - I like some junk mail. I just don’t want this junk mail. So, goodbye.

Go to OptOutPrescreen.com. It’s a 2 part system. Enter your info online, then print out the page they give you to mail in. Ta da.

Just to be clear, I don’t think there should be laws against junk mail. I just want to be able to eliminate from my own mailbox if I choose. This allows me to do just that. Interestingly, this kind of law has passed in several other states already.

Currently, do-not-mail bills that include a do-not-mail registry similar to do-not-call legislation are pending in Connecticut, Colorado, Hawaii, New York, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Texas and Washington. In total, 12 bills have been filed in both the houses and senates of these states.

Several other bills – in New York, Virginia, New Jersey and Washington – offer related measures including the creation of a do-not-mail registry of certain senior citizens and people with mental illness. Another would prohibit mailing credit card solicitations to people under the age of 21 .

The Colorado lawmaker behind this bill, Rep. Sara Gagliardi, D-Arvada may reintroduce the bill after “all parties work together to try to reach a compromise.”
