Do you know?

One of my favorite education bloggers put up a nice post that I meant to link to, I just forgot. Mamacita has the 100 words that every high school graduate should know.

The words . . . are not meant to be exhaustive but are a benchmark against which graduates and their parents can measure themselves. If you are able to use these words correctly, you are likely to have a superior command of the language.”

She even bolds the words she had to look up (2). How many did you have to look up? She also has a list of favorite quotes. The one that stood out to me:

Educated men are as much superior to uneducated men, as the living are to the dead.

And in her own words,

A large vocabulary, used properly, is an indication of education. It is not an indication of where one got that education, but it’s definitely a symptom of being learned.

I’m familiar with ‘moiety’ from reading Heinlein’s “Citizen of the Galaxy” but it brings to mind the street character from “In Living Color” clapping the backs of his hands and calling for “mo’ iety”.
