The tooth fairy is making a stop at our house tonight. Emma lost her 3rd tooth tonight - with a little help from mummy and a dental floss lasso. With the first lost tooth I made the suggestion that putting it in an envelope would keep it from getting lost under her pillow (and easier for daddy to find it - but of course a parent can’t say that, can they?). Good plan.
On the envelope tonight, a simple “To the Tooth Fairy, Love Emma.” Aaaaahhhh.
Inside the envelope, with a brand new dollar coin:
Emma,
Thank you for the lovely tooth. I can tell that this one had some help coming out by someone who loves you! I remember the last time I was here – you’re much bigger than before!
This tooth had a lot of sugar on it. That was okay for baby teeth because they fall out. It’s not okay for grown up teeth, though. You don’t want those to get cavities or fall out. That’s not very much fun. Take care of your new big-girl teeth!
Hope you like the new dollar coin – you’re the very first one to use it!
Love,
The Tooth Fairy
Subtle, huh? Am I going to be in trouble when she’s old enough to find this post?

We leave the teeth in ziplock baggies so the tooth fairy can find them easily. But really, what is this world coming to when the Tooth Fairy has to lecture your child about dental hygiene and nutrition? Next thing you know Santa will be scolding her to share all her toys with underprivileged children.
Great idea! If the Tooth Fairy was a subtle hint, Santa Claus could be the heavy reinforcement every parent needs.
We had a family friend write a similar note when the Big-Eyed Boy lost his first tooth. (I didn’t want our son to recognize my writing.) We included $5 on the condition that he spend it on a toothbrush.
Rich,
Loved your charming Tooth Fairy story! I thought it was great to leave a note–can’t remember ever getting one when I was little, but all I cared about was getting the quarter anyway (ha! ha!)
Brilliant!
When my son was 11, he tried to “trick” the tooth-fairy into giving him money for a wadded up piece of toilet paper under his pillow. I did make sure I went up to swipe the wipe before I went to bed. The tooth fairy left him a whole dollar… in Monopoly money!
Great blog. Thanks for adding me to your blogroll. I’ve also added you to mine!
