Virtual schools aren’t ‘home schooling’

This subject comes up regularly in our world. Usually when I hear (or read) that sentence it is a ‘home schooler’ demanding the difference be made. Much rarer are the instances where an administrator explains the difference calmly and rationally, as did William Harbron, Ed.D., Superintendent, Northern Ozaukee (Wisconsin) School District recently.

While online public schools are not for all kids, they are a viable solution for many. Districts that offer online schools care deeply about helping educate every child and meeting their individual needs. That’s our number one priority. We believe public education is improved by giving families more options and allowing them the freedom to choose the best public school for their children. Wisconsin’s online schools should be preserved and protected. Taking these options away will only hurt the very children we are called to serve.

Replace “Wisconsin” with any other state name and the story remains true.
