I’m not going to work today

but I’m not “calling in gay” like Anti-Prop 8 protesters. I actually have a good excuse - I got laid off.

Some same-sex marriage supporters are urging people to “call in gay” Wednesday to show how much the country relies on gays and lesbians, but others question whether it’s wise to encourage skipping work given the nation’s economic distress.

Organizers of “Day Without a Gay” — scheduled to coincide with International Human Rights Day and modeled after similar work stoppages by Latino immigrants — also are encouraging people to perform volunteer work and refrain from spending money.

Sean Hetherington, a West Hollywood comedian and personal trainer, dreamed up the idea with his boyfriend, Aaron Hartzler, after reading online that a few angry gay-rights activists were calling for a daylong strike to protest California voters’ passage last month of Proposition 8, which reversed this year’s state Supreme Court decision allowing gay marriage.

Calling in gay? Are you guys sure this is a good idea? So you get to prove to the person that signs your paycheck that you’re actually unreliable as an employee? Hey, good luck with that.

UPDATE: Just to be safe, I worked anyway. I served up a lot of french fries, too. Don’t tell the unemployment office, k?

Sorry to hear about your situation, I’ll be praying.

I am sure there are some areas that would be hurt by a “gay out”. The entertainment industry for one and San Francisco as a whole for two….but that’s it.

Gays and Lesbians believe very strongly that they are 10% of the population. There is even a magazine called 10% that supports that community. They are however deluding themselves. Actual figures (which don’t include prison populations) are between 1 and 2%.

That’s even less than I’d given them credit for, then. I remembered hearing a 4% estimate bandied around somewhere. It’s remarkable that such a small percentage of any population can control popular opinion the way they do…

We heartless, cruel conservatives are the ones keeping the “gays” down, doncha know?
I’m with you—seems like a dumb idea, convincing your employer that you are unreliable, especially when the economy is struggling. Geez.
