Always wanted this

When Emma was a toddler she constantly tried to climb into our laps to help herself to meal time. It was just impossible to eat for a year. That, combined with the new baby toys all over the floor making it more of a circus act to walk through the house, made us think about […]

National Charter Schools Week

It’s National Charter Schools Week, and that means lots of chatter in Washington, D.C., about whether charter schools hurt or improve public education. … The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, which favors the expansion of charter schools, conducted a March poll of 800 registered voters and found a majority of them want more public […]

All right, all right

Nothing like your friends complaining to make you post something, huh?
Happy Pascha, Christo Anesti! We’ve just celebrated our first Lent/Holy Week/Pascha in the Orthodox church. Too wonderful for words, and many other Orthodox bloggers have written about it better than I would. So, how about a general update?
The symphony has a concert tomorrow night. You […]

Busy week

My work dumped about 140 people from its corporate office in the last week, so the day job has been a little more exciting than normal.
Pascha is next week, so this week is (supposed to be) all about the preparation.
I’m playing the spring musical with one of the local high schools, so all the non-day-job […]

Birthdays approaching

Mine and Fluff’s, anyway. I’m thinking about taking her to the opera. The Met has a live broadcast that is carried by some movie theatres - and it’s La Boheme! How cool would this kind of a tradition be?

The Book of Revelation in the Orthodox church

This post isn’t in direct relationship to Great Lent, as is most of what I’ve posted lately. Instead, this is something that came up during a visit to family over the western Easter Sunday. Why doesn’t the Orthodox church teach anything about the Book of Revelation?
As with most questions of this type, its complicated. The […]

“child advocates”

In the immortal words of Inigo Montoya, “you keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.”
A California court has ruled that the homeschooled children of Phillip and Mary Long must attend public schools - or, as the “court” put it,
that several children in one homeschool family must be […]

Vacation

Off for 2 weeks on a much needed vacation. No blogging, no working. Nada but family and friends. And I’m not saying where we’re going.

Nothing to worry about,

I’m sure.
But my flight at the end of the month lands here. Same kind of aircraft, too. They’re still cleaning up the wreckage.

“I’m not strange…

I’m just amusing sometimes.”
(That’s a direct quote from Mrs. Exvig. Had to be documented, don’t you think?)

Christmas Eve 2007

That can mean only one thing. Time to track Santa’s sleigh! I’ve stolen this blatantly from someone else, but can’t remember who. Meh. They pinched it from someone else, too, I’m sure. I’m putting this here mostly so that Emma and I can track it later and I won’t have to look far.
From How Stuff […]

You know what is cool?

That I can check on my daughter’s school progress for the day, see what subjects she’s studying today - she’s doubledipping on science today, and Instant Message her:
hey Emma - a bunch of GIRLS won a big math and science competition:
and she reads the article and responds to me. Via Instant Message. About the weather […]

It’s a Monday

Boy, ain’t it. I’m feeling it, too. I played the Messiah twice over the weekend - once for Gateway High School (the symphony provided some “support,” meaning we gave them an orchestra to back up their 200-voice combined choir) and another for the LDS church in Castle Rock, CO. That one is always enjoyable because […]

The hand of God

I think that readers of this site truly believe that God has a hand in everything they do. We don’t realize it most of the time, as is our nature. Imagine then, realizing it in this way. Miraculous. Nothing short of it.

By default, if you work with me, are related to me, or even know me you’re automatically a geek (you’re welcome). Some of you might qualify for dork, but that usually requires spending a lot of time with me in person. As all good geek/dorks know, you need to be prepared for Thanksgiving. Somebody is bound to […]
