Denise found a new website here in Colorado that allows parents to enter their home address and find all of the alternatives available to them for schooling. Check it out!

How can this be viewed any other way? Rep. Mike Merrifield intends to pick up where he left off as the chair of the House Education committee for Colorado’s next legislative session. This gentleman has made it clear that he does not give any validity to any type of education other than what he can […]

Remember last week’s roundup of public school concerns (among other things)? One of those concerns - that of building inspections by the state - is getting a shot in the arm to the tune of nearly $350,000. On Monday,
(t)he Joint Budget Committee approved two separate requests for emergency funding to pay for temporary building […]

The Denver Post carried an editorial last Saturday written by former public school teacher and principal Van Schoales. The current Piton Foundation Education program officer takes a swipe at public schools in general using the latest CSAP results.
The latest CSAP data reveal that kids who start out below proficiency stay there. And of those that […]

I mentioned that my household is part of the Colorado Virtual Academy. CNN Money has a write up of COVA’s core curriculum, K12.
K12 launched its business in September 2001, when it contracted with the states of Pennsylvania and Colorado to serve 900 students from kindergarten to second grade. Since then it has scaled up in […]

More of a roundup than anything else, because I’m short on time a lot lately.
I meant to write about the state’s recent CSAP exam scores, but since Michael has done such a great job I recommend you read his posts here, here, here, here, here, here and finally - whew - here (a little linky-love, no?). […]

Denise posted this gem yesterday:
Only 45 of the 178 school districts in Colorado have a collective bargaining agreement. Almost all of the charter schools in Colorado have requested and were granted the waiver from negotiating with the teacher’s union. In fact, the charter school started by the teacher’s union even has the waiver.
School time!
Even as a kid I looked forward to school starting up again. Frankly, I was bored a lot during the summer. Many years and personality profiles later I realize that it was the structure of the day provided by schooling that I appreciated. Now, we’ve had anything but a lazy summer this year, but […]
Why see cyber schools as a threat?
The Philadelphia Inquirer has that question this morning (HT: edspresso). We certainly see that same behavior here in Colorado. They just don’t get it - namely this:
The ultimate test for cyber schools is choice. If parents are not pleased with results, they can switch to another school. If public school […]
A couple of weeks ago I pointed out to you the story of a couple of Houston charter schools that were suspected of cheating. Thanks in part to a Dallas Morning News investigation the Texas Education Agency could launch proceedings to close one of the schools permanently (the Jesse Jackson Academy was cleared, partly because the investigation […]
Heck, anytime reading. Find me a better website than this, I dare you. Read a book a piece at a time. Sure it will take you a year to read Anna Karenina, but if you’re like me and read 6 books at once, it would probably take a year anyway.
Maybe I could get through one […]
…if you’re in public school. Out here in the Virtual Academy world (nee Homeschooling) the learners just keep on learning. We have fun, too (Mummy took the girls to Elitch’s yesterday), so it’s not Oppressive.
Lot’s going on in the education world, too. Check out the latest Carnival of Education and Carnival of Homeschooling.
One of my favorite education bloggers put up a nice post that I meant to link to, I just forgot. Mamacita has the 100 words that every high school graduate should know.
The words . . . are not meant to be exhaustive but are a benchmark against which graduates and their parents can measure themselves. […]
Who are your heroes? I’ve come across plenty of people recently who certainly count as heroes. They come in all varieties and no, they don’t fly or stop time.
Ben’s brother, Brad.
The teachers, administrators, students and parents of Cheyenne Mountain Charter Academy.
The Rocky Mountain Alliance of Bloggers‘ very own Mr. Bob. And his underwear!

How about the […]
From this morning’s Dallas News:
Last year, 53 sophomores took the math TAKS test at Houston’s Jesse Jackson Academy. Two stood out from the crowd.
They were the only two whose answer sheets don’t show evidence of cheating.
Sorry, what was the name of that school? Ah, here it is - the Jesse Jackson Academy.
“Mind-boggling,” said David Harpp, […]
